You don't have to press Ctrl or Shift. Just Alt-dragging
will select columns of text.
To paste each tab-delimited chunk into a separate cell,
select a destination area in the table that matches the
dimensions of what you've copied. For example, say you copy
two columns by eight rows from your TXT file. If you select
an empty two columns by eight rows in the destination table
before pasting, the material will be pasted into separate
cells.
It can be tedious to count your stuff when selecting and
pasting, so I usually just convert the source TXT file into
a table with the desired number of columns (using the Table
> Convert commands and deleting unwanted columns). Then I
cut and paste entire rows into the destination table.
