Thank you for all the advice and commiseration. :-) I'm finding this
very challenging, not least because they tend to be short documents (how
much time can I spend cleaning up any one of them?), and there are all
kinds of merge fields, which seem to make the formatting behave
unpredictably.

It's certainly a job with variety.
