Hmmm, all I know is it worked when I tried it 5 years ago using Acrobat 3.
Obviously there've been some changes made ;)

Couple of questions:

1. After you removed the password, did you do a Save As to overwrite the
original? If you didn't, I think the password remains in effect.

2. Did you try printing to a PostScript file and distilling that or did
you run the Distiller plugin that's used with Word? Printing to a PS file
and distilling it in GhostScript or the Mac's Preview app might be a
workaround.
