Mordechai Brown wondered: <<I've been using Word 2000's Insert Comment
feature for years, but recently the yellow highlighting on the
commented text, as well as the tool-tip display of the comment itself,
stopped working on both of my computers. The only way I can see the
comments is to open the View Comments pane. The same files on other
computers work fine. I tried reinstalling Word, but it didn't help.>>
Haven't used Word 2000, but based on the behavior in previous and
subsequent versions (PC and Mac), it's likely a problem with one of
your View preferences. Open the Preferences (Mac) or Options (Windows),
and have a look at the View tab: Screentips and Highlighting must both
be selected for the comment highlighting to appear and to pop up the
comment text when you hold the cursor over the highlighting. You may
also want to select "Hidden text"; generally, this can't hurt.
Word's preferences have always been flakey and subject to change for
reasons known only to Microsoft; for example, I've found that there
appear to be a few obscure keyboard commands you can hit accidentally
that randomly change preferences settings without telling you that they
did so. Plus, the preferences file becomes corrupt far more often than
it should. Life with Word!
