Most of this discussion involves icons for control buttons from a
software interface.

Anther entire category are the icons used in many industrial settings
for cautions, warnings, and the like. For these, it is often best in
my experience to include the icon in the style definition (at least in
Frame).

While I agree that screenshots may be costly, very often they are so
much more compact than trying to do things with only generic icons and
a description in the text that they may still be quite cost-efficient.

If you label the corresponding screenshot files to include a code for
the language involved, a fairly simple script can be run to place the
right shots in the right language docs.
