I think you bring up an important point. As you imply, the original meaning of "introvert" is a person whose motivations and ethics are derived from personal values, rather than social mores or personal relations. However, the meaning of the word has been watered-down to apply to diffidence and outright antisocial behavior.

Perhaps the reason is that Americans especially seem to see extroversion as a positive value - which means that introversion, its opposite, must somehow be undesirable. For instance, a person who is seen as introverted is often considered unstable and suspect, and many parents worry about children who spend too much time reading or using the computer. In fact, extroversion can be accompanied by instability and undesirable behavior just as often as introversion. Yet few parents worry that a child is too active in sports or social activities.

Perhaps these attitudes are part of the anti-intellectualism strain that runs through popular culture. Intellectuals are seen as introverts, and so introversion is seen as suspect.
