I was happy to learn from other responders how to use text insets.
However, if a lot of information is common to multiple manuals, you may want to consider using conditional text.
I am currently using conditional text in FrameMaker 7.1 to provide vendor-specific installation guides, where a lot of the information is common to all the installations. After applying conditional tags as needed, I created a separate BK file for each unique version (with a unique TOC and Index). As a result, instead of having to import a lot of common text, I simply edit the source text in place.
