Okay, I haven't tried Acrobat 7 yet, but have Acrobat 6 and it may be
similar. If you use the Acrobat toolbar button in MS Word, you get the pdf
produced using the last settings you set under the menu in MS Word: Adobe
PDF >> "Change Conversion Settings"

>From there, you get to choose from pre-set settings (press, print, screen,
etc) and can produce custom settings as well. And, even with these preset
options, you still have to set other things, including whether tocs become
live and bookmarks are produced and from what styles they are produced.

You also have the option to produced tagged pdfs: "Enable accessibility and
reflow with Tagged PDF". In my experience with large documents, this is the
one that adds the largest amount of time to the conversion process.

Oh, and another cute thing. When setting the file security in Acrobat at the
high encryption level, choosing low resolution printing instead of high
resolution printing causes major problem for many people who try to print
the file from the Internet or after downloading. The low resolution printing
allowance sends each page to the printer as a bitmap and can cause memory
problems ... Which of course don't appear as memory problems, but just as
the darn thing getting hung up when printing.

My experience (with Word) has been that if you use the Acrobat toolbar
button, you get bookmarks AND hyperlinks (if, that is, the conversion ever
completes - some documents just refuse to convert within practical
timescales). If, however, your print to a file and then distil that file, it
takes about 5 seconds and results in NO bookmarks, but you DO get
hyperlinks.
