In my previous incarnation, I lived in a small town within reach of three large, busy cities. Most of my work (as in 99 percent) was in one of the three cities. I had three options for dealing with travel time:
1) Build into the agreement that I would be paid time & cost. I used this successfully for exactly one contract.
2) Including travel time in my invoices, at a reduced rate. I used this for the majority of my contracts.
3) Nothing. I had one long-term, on-site contract for which I was paid absolutely nothing for the cost of travel, nor for the cost of staying in another city to complete the work. I did this because I *wanted* the contract. It represented a huge opportunity for me and I was unwilling to risk it for something as petty as money. It turned out that it cost me fifty cents on the dollar to do the contract.

I'm considering a job that requires me to travel about 400 miles each way for a business meeting at the client's location twice a month. What can I expect in the way of reimbursement for the travel? Expenses, expenses + travel time, expenses + travel time + time on site??? I'm new to this aspect of Tech Writing, so please give me some idea of what is usual and customary.

Thanks,

Steve
