I've been very happy using a mini-disc recorder. I get about 4 or 5
hours on a disc (the new Hi-MD format can record up to 45 hours) with
excellent sound quality. I'd highly recommend investing in a decent
microphone that can switch from directional to omni-directional.

One nice about the MD recorders is that it's very easy to split a
track into smaller chunks. That's handy if you need to play a portion
over and over when transcribing.
