Steven writes: <<More generally, I've found (from both sides of the
manager's desk) that the clueful employer that supports the professional
development of employees gets both more professionally developed and MORE
LOYAL employees. There's no need to leave to learn new things if you can
learn them on your current job.>>
That's really what it's all about, isn't it? Loyalty is a funny thing. An
employer can experience loyalty in a lot of ways, including a "heads up"
when "stuff" is flying because the employee is someplace the employer can't
be.
You only get loyalty if you've earned it, and a salary for an honest day's
work is only one of many steps toward earning it. Working for your own,
indirect best interest means fighting for $145/year per employee to ensure
their growth, then feeling entitled to an annual justification report about
what they learned through their participation.
BTW: Budget the dollars and send them to the annual conference with a plan.
What do you want them to learn? What would benefit them - and you - most?
Take a look at this year's annual conference program. It's pretty robust,
and I didn't see any "job seeking advice" type sessions in there (I'm not
saying there aren't any, just that I didn't see any.)
