The last five places I have contracted with have eliminated printed
documentation entirely, relying instead on Acrobat files distributed
on the software CD and/or downloadable from the company support
Website.
In addition, all have produced online help files.
In my experience, three-ring binders are in most places the *worst*
method. Copies in the hands of users are usually not current...and
using such a binder that contains some relevant information and some
that is no longer current can be a serious problem for newcomers.
Especially in heavily regulated industries such as medical care, I
would strongly discourage that approach. In addition to not assuring
the best quality of patient care, it could open up some liability
issues that would *not* be fun.
Which printing method you use depends principally upon the size of the
manuals and how many copies you must produce. Personally, I like
spiral "Wire-O" bindings for training manuals, as any page can be
opened on the front with all others conveniently behind--since so many
training sites have limited desktop space for students.
For reference guides and such, these days I tend to prefer
perfect-bound volumes the page size of which determined more by the
content than any given preference--although I do not favor in most
instances sizes large enough that they won't fit conveniently on a
standard bookshelf.
