Have you considered a digital camera that can capture in black-and-white text mode? For text-only captures, this makes very small files. Use a higher-resolution setting to capture olor and continuous-tone images.

A small tripod is important to avoid skewing, so you can get good OCR.

Does anyone have experience using a handheld scanner to capture text and graphics? I have a project coming up where a handheld scanner would probably be helpful if the results were good and easy to manage.
