True enough, but accurate content and spotting affect/effect in a surprise test are not the same thing. Yes, any writer needs to have the basic grasp of the English language (or whatever language they are working in) as well as have the ability to proof their own work or their peers'. I do question, though, how a SURPRISE test achieves this.

A surprise test of grammar, spelling, punctuation, or the correct use of FrameMaker templates would not throw me. Would that that was the test I got thrown not long ago. Rather, having at least read my resume, the interviewer picked a technology I had not worked with since 1997 (ATM networking) and started asking me detailed questions about it. I mean really detailed, such as asking how long an ATM cell was and what the packing strategy for the protocol was. Yikes! That wasn't a big part of what I'd been working on at that job anyway, and it's been years since I had to dredge all that up. I consider that kind of interview to be an unfair ambush. Now, if they'd asked me to go into detail about the latest technology I'd been working with (802.11b/g networking), I could have accomodated them with ease. Or they could have asked me about anything I'd done in the last two or three jobs. But I thought it was unfair to go back that far and expect me to be as much en point as I would be if I'd just left that job.
