It isn't "car sales" and if that's the approach, nothing will work.

I'm not following you, Sherry. I agree this isn't car sales. I'm just saying his visceral reaction to the invoice _he requested I send him_ (even though I wanted to negotiate an overall agreement first) was akin to sticker shock. So I would think that there is probably some reasonably standard way of ameliorating that shock. An experienced salesperson (car or otherwise) would probably be able to suggest something.
