Where I worked several years ago, the legal team told
us to take the writers' names off the documents. They
said the problem was what happens after a writer has
left the company. By their worst-case scenario,
as soon as someone else revises the document, the
original writer phones and either he says "Why did
you put someone else's name on? I did all the real
work," or he says, "Why did you print my name on that
garbage? I had nothing to do with the new edition."
You're in charge of the reputation of someone who isn't
even an employee any more and you can't win.
I was delighted to follow the legal team's advice,
but for different reasons. I was managing a team
of writers and I didn't want any writer thinking
"Why should I share my smarts with another writer
when he's going to get the credit?"
