What's the syntax of the link that works and the link that doesn't?
Simulate them.

Also, couldn't you serve them via HTTP? You already have to maintain
thumbnails. Why not keep everything together?

Another way to debug is with a real FTP client, instead of a browser,
so you can see all the server messages. Alternately, if you're using
MSIE, turn off "Friendly error messages" in Tools -> Options ->
Advanced.
