I'm not a technical writer but a typesetter/designer. Haven't used LaTex
for many years, but when I had clients who needed to have a lot of
equations in their documents, I used it. What troubled my clients was
that they couldn't choose the font they wanted. Pretty much we were stuck
with the serif font as it had been designed. But it made setting
equations much easier than doing it any other way.

I never set type with LaTeX; so I can't compare. But Interleaf 5 had a VERY slick equation editor, and you could pick whatever font you had the patience to install (font installation is, um, somewhat unintuitive in Interleaf). For anyone publishing engineering papers with lots of equations, farming them out to someone with access to Interleaf 5 is an option worth considering.
