Like others, I tend to think of it as a profession rather than an
industry. As to numbers there are few statistics. Some for Europe can be
found at:

(down near the bottom - Who is doing TC in Europe?)

Figures are for Germany with extrapolations for other countries.
Few other interesting bits 'n' bobs on the site (and some dead links!)
if you want to have a look and get a bit of a feel for TC outside the
US.
