You want it. Any graphic that _can_ be made in a vector-based illustrator _should_ be. And anything can be. Ultimately you'll want to replace Fireworks with Inkscape, and PhotoShop with The GIMP. Anybody's toolkit needs both a raster and vector image app.

Fireworks is a very nice product, especially if it's free (to you).

Note that Fireworks' native file format is called PNG, but it's really PNG plus proprietary extensions (I haven't used it since 1999, but that's how it was). Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is the open standard. Inkscape is committed to SVG.

Take it, and get your feet wet with vector graphics. Loss-less scaling. Crazy geometric transformations. Feel the power.
