I think you are on target with a more informal style in this instance. I
wrote a paper for a graduate class when working a master's degree in
Technical Writing about using a more informal style of writing for this type
of technical writing. I used a more "narrative style" of writing and
compared it to the more typical technical style often found in manuals. A
large percentage of my survey population preferred the more narrative style
of writing.
