I was emailed about a posting on Monster.com this weekend for a position up in Wisconsin. They want a tech writer with construction, mining, and/or trades experience for $13-$15/hour. They're willing to train someone to write, but technical knowledge/experience is required. (Nothing said about training an experienced writer in the technology they need to write about...)

Today, one can make that much working at a non-specialized job (such as retail sales). I wish them luck, but at that price, they're going to get the bottom of the barrel in experience and/or quality.

I don't think the total amount is necessarily obvious. As for
why, I imagine it's a decent tool for recruitment/retention.
I used to work at a company that created those statements.

Me, I want a ticket to this planet where contractors are
making $75/hr. :-) Maybe I need to be more aggressive.
