Can anyone explain the authoring and preparation of
use cases and the process of putting one together?

This will be done in a software development
environment for an ERP product.

The concept of use cases underlies the help system design approach described in "The TWIT Rapid Development Method" at http://hytext.com/jers/Help+authoring.htm

The idea is to imagine the user trying to get the job done. You ask what the task is, then whisper instructions in the user's ear to accomplish the task using your software. Write down what you whisper, and your documentation is use-case, task-oriented.
