Rebecca,

It's a matter of your program losing its mind, or an inadvertant changing
of settings.

>From the Word menu bar select Tools > Options, and the View tab.

The Formatting Marks section holds the checkboxes that control which
typographical marks are displayed. Check the ones you want and click the
Ok button.

That's all you need to do.
