Actually, the argument that leaned me towards hyphenating e-words was
just the opposite of this. The examples used were x-ray and o-ring.
Despite years of use, still hyphenated.

I tend to make the argument for consistency across e-words, since some
words would be very confusing if they were not hyphenated. Not an
issue I will expend alot of capital on, as an itinerant tech writer, I
will make my case, but move on if the client really wants email.
