Thanks very much for the advice.
I'd be happy to give up a "captive" job to bill myself as an independent, but I'm not certain how to go about doing this. Thus far I have been searching for "contract technical writer" jobs at the usual job boards, and finding a lot---but no call-backs. The captive companies love my resume but want me on-site. How does one go about setting up a network as a consultant writer?

However, lots of companies are willing to outsource to an independent consultant, on a project-by-project basis. And some projects, as I'm sure you know, can be multi-year affairs. So you may want to reposition yourself that way. I did that almost a year ago. At first it was slow, and unemployment insurance was the bulk of my income. But I'm off the dole now and business is picking up quite nicely. This year's gross may be down a bit (or may not be), but at the rate I'm going I'll make more in 2006 than I ever made as a (pretty well paid) captive. And except for the occasional courtesy visit to local businesses, I never even meet my clients.
