All I know, from my own experience studying foreign languages, is that
reading the language in print is much easier (actually, I think "possible"
would be a better choice of terms here) then trying to keep up with the
spoken language, which, for me, is next to impossible. Also, I know of an
offshore outsourcing firm, that communicates with the offshore employees via
e-mail and instant messaging, as those employees have a better handle on the
written language as opposed to the spoken. So maybe I'm not alone in
finding the written language easier to digest than the spoken. I feel that
the written language allows me to go at my own pace and digest what I've
read. (This is purely from a hobbyist perspective. I've never been
"immersed" in a foreign language, reading material has always been
accessible.)

However, even in English, I feel much more competent and comfortable with
the written word than the spoken.
