Does anyone have an idea what causes the following?

Scenario: Two writers use FrameMaker to create PDF files
(FrameMaker>Distiller>PDF).
They build the same file on their respective machines.
When comparing the resulting PDFs, the fonts appear different.
One of the PDFs has thinner characters that are harder to read.
But when the thin PDF is magnified to 150%, the characters look like
the correct font.

Setting aside, for the moment, the appearance of the PDFs on the monitors, do the two PDFs look the same when printed on the same printer?

Do the two PDFs look the same when viewed on the same computer and same monitor?

If the answer to those two questions is Yes, take a look at the display settings for the two computers. One may have "font smoothing" turned on and the other have it off. Also, the two computers may have different display drivers, different screen resolutions, or different graphics cards.

If none of those factors are involved, check the Distiller settings on the two machines. Especially look to ensure that fonts are embedding properly and that the same job options are in use on both machines.
