For what it's worth, that's a Windows convention. In the rest of the
world, file types are identified by header data within the file, or by
parsing the file's contents. Filename extensions may be used elsewhere,
but only Windows considers them authoritative. Which is, you might guess,
both a wonderful convenience and a design flaw. And a floor wax. And a
dessert topping.
