I did discover a resolution for the issue I asked about yesterday
concerning distributing interactive PDF Forms. If you create your forms
and massage them with a product called "Adobe LiveCycle Reader
Extensions Server" this will allow users with plain old Acrobat Reader
to fill in the form, save the form (with data) and send back the form
(with data).
Several on this list suggested good ideas for ways to collect and
process the data, but that implied I would need to do something with the
data the customer returns other than simply file it and refer to it from
time to time. In the case of these forms, the data is simply needed for
reference and captured for contractual reasons.
At any rate, the Reader Extensions Server software would do the trick,
but when checking Adobe's website they don't even give a price for the
software--they refer to an "Enterprise Solutions Sales" Rep... I can
easily see a five-figure price tag attached...
So now I've referred the issue to some colleagues in the web development
team to see if perhaps we can come up with an online solution that would
capture the data in the form, print the form for the customer, and send
the form with completed data back to us.
<rant>
If MS Word were only a little more reliable and I could be sure every
single customer had it, I would just design the form in Word, have them
fill it out, and e-mail the Word file back once completed. It shouldn't
take rocket science to complete a simple task like this...
