TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Structured FrameMaker equates, generally, to XML and portable
pieces of words and graphics that can be used in other formats,
programs and environments than those in which they were created.
Unstructured is the traditional model of book building and writing.
Whether or not things are moving toward XML depends a lot on
how large a company you work for or how geeky it is -- it takes a
lot of ca$h and knowledge to effectively use XML to reuse elements
across a company or corporation.
If you're more interested in writing books and don't have to fit your work
into a structured format, I'd elect for unstructured to start with and then
segue into structured docs as you have the need and experience.
