Several ways to look at 'what needs to be done'

Consulting work

In several of the books that I have read about consulting, they have said
that time should be allocated somewhat along these lines.

2080 working hours in the year (52 weeks @ 40 hours per week)

160 hours for vacation/time off (4 weeks @ 40 hours per week (don't have to
be consecutive, of course))
--------
1920 hours

200 hours
looking for new business
training/education, etc
--------------------
1720 billable hours

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------
"Direct" employment

If you are tied to a direct job you gotta use some of your 'non-productive'
time (outside the 8-hour day) for the education, training, etc., that you
need to keep up with your jab and competition.

Otherwise, get your supervisor to send you to classes, or allow you to use
some of your working day for self-education. CBT's, etc.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------

One way to look at it is that you are a 'small business', and responsible to
your suppliers and customers. (Shades of a Quality approach as promoted by
Deming, Perry, and others)
