Not to muddy the waters, but unless you require full Unicode support for your documentation SW (which FM doesn't have anyway) I would suggest that you take a serious look at LaTeX. Incredibly powerful (far, far beyond FM and the like when it comes to long document & complex typesetting), free, and supported with hundreds and hundreds of enthusiasts' web pages, BBS's and discussion lists.
The downside? I would say font installation and difficult to change the layout (although KOMA-Script and Peter Wilson's memoir class have changed that to some degree). Plus some ppl don't like to work in pure ASCII where formatting commands are blended with the actual text.

Does anyone have any experience using BroadVision QuickSilver? I was
specifically wondering how it compares to FrameMaker.
On the BroadVision web site it says "BroadVision QuickSilver enables you to

(including HTML, PDF and Postscript) and automates publishing of
personalized content to BroadVision Portal. Assemble publications from a

environment."
Here the current requirement is to produce printed manuals and to also have
them available in PDF, and for that I've been using FM. My manager asked me
to take a look at QuickSilver because it's apparently used at another
location to produce manuals.
