Yes, this is a common problem -- worst in Word 2002 (XP), but also seen
in Word 2003.

In addition to Paul's suggestion re Normal and Print view, I have heard
anecdotally of some other possible causes and solutions:

* The template is either corrupt or copied from a different version of
Word. Try attaching the document to a _fresh_ Normal template (i.e.,
move or rename the Normal template, restart, and then attach the
document).

* One or more styles is set to automatically update. Clear this check
box in every style.

* There is a table in the header or footer of the document. Use manual
formatting instead.

* Try inserting a few hard page breaks in the document.
