Simple? There's often nothing simple once you've locked your choice onto a 
standard to which you data may or may not fit.

Even if DocBook, DITA, or some other already developed XML DTD/schema is a 
good fit for what you want to do and the data you which to manipulate, 
don't underestimate (or worse still simply ignore) the significant work 
that may be required to customise either the XML setup or your data to 
make it all work.

Don't discount FrameMaker or embrace other tools simply because they are 
or aren't open source. Research you requirements and choose the tools 
based on your needs and the tool's capabilities.
