We'll have to agree to disagree. With a bit of instruction and a
little supervision, we turned over 100 developers into fairly decent
if not very good writers. They're even critiquing each other's work,
and in some cases are enjoying it!

If you can articulate in one medium, chances are you can do so in
another. You may need a bit of help getting started, but it's not
impossible for someone to learn how to write well with basic
instruction. In fact, I'd wonder why anyone would hire someone who is
incapable of authoring a coherent document.

Engineers really do need to be able to write well. They need to
communicate their work, if not to customers then to an internal
audience. Usually this is in the form of written specifications. If
they can write these effectively, then they can write anything
effectively. All they need is instruction and the drive to do it. If
you're having trouble with the latter, remember that paychecks are
very good incentives. ;-)
