It's quite common for teachers of technical writing NOT to have any actual job experience as a techwriter, all over North America. Scary thought! For me, it was quite an adjustment to go from working with clients and employers, to working with students and colleagues. I have found those colleagues, however, to be entirely knowledgeable about the subject and with high standards for technical writing, even through they may not have spent any time in the trenches. They may not have the war stories that I have to tell, but they are well versed in the tactics of the profession.
