Couple of quick points. I get careless, so all this applies to me, too.

1. The reason people CAN get side-tracked by errors in other people's
posts is that the posters are putting those errors in.

2. That technical writers post errors and display uncertainty about
things like "what's active voice" doesn't bode well for us if innocent
bystanders peruse these archives looking for knowledgeable people.

3. That we pick on the errors of fellow posters doesn't bode well,
either.
