Just taking a stand is often enough to end your career with that company. I once went toe-to-toe with my superior over an employee who reported to me. It didn't matter that I was in the right; I was asked to leave "because I had lost faith in senior management". It came down to who was more valuable to the company, a pubs manager or a VP R&D. Defending that employee cost me a job I loved, in a company that otherwise was a great place to work. I knew that job loss was a possible outcome when I chose to support my team member. I would do it again in an instant.
