Just taking a stand is often enough to end your career with that company. I once went toe-to-toe with my superior over an employee who reported to me. It didn't matter that I was in the right; I was asked to leave "because I had lost faith in senior management". It came down to who was more valuable to the company, a pubs manager or a VP R&D. Defending that employee cost me a job I loved, in a company that otherwise was a great place to work. I knew that job loss was a possible outcome when I chose to support my team member. I would do it again in an instant.

I don't think I would ever advise someone in a situation like this to play
hardball (if someone who had already decided to asked *how,* that
would be different). My observation of others who have gone the hardball
route is that in some cases they managed to make things better for those
who came after them, but even if things turned out the way they hoped
the experience still resulted in bad feelings about the fact they had to do
it at all and they ended up leaving their employers fairly soon after. Not
to say you shouldn't take a stand, just don't do so believing that the
problem will be resolved and you will automatically be happy with your
job again.

LOL. Because it's easy to talk hardball when you don't actually have to *do* it and *live* with it.
