Sara,

I can see where the guy is coming from; an element attribute is usually
more or less synonymous with a property of the data it identifies, but this is
a gross generalization as it could instead be meta data that is meaningful in
a higher context (like in a HyTime link, but in a way also in something like
an HTML hyperlink or the target of a image element).

If you have the time, make the change; I think you'd feel happier about it in
the future. If time really doesn't permit, go for the disclaimer.
