Word question: using If fields for conditional text and using outline numbering

I have two versions of a document that differ mainly in that certain
paragraphs are included for internal users and excluded for external
users.
I'm about 85% of the way to using Word's IF field and a hidden bookmark
to handle them in a single document.
However, I can't find a way to have the sometimes-hidden text include
the outline numbering associated with its paragraph style when it is
displayed. It does use the correct styles for each of the hidden
paragraphs, but it won't show the outline numbering for the Heading 2
paragraph.
