Re: Non-TW supervisor
As an informal poll, I'm curious how many employees (as opposed to
contractors and self-employed) have/had supervisors with no tech comm
background? How do you feel about this? What advantages and
disadvantages does this have? How do you inform and 'train' supervisors
without confusing or overwhelming them? What if that supervisor also
lacks a management background?
I've had quite a few non-TW supervisors, and still do. The trick is to
do good work, build their trust, and let them do the managing and let
you manage the techcomm stuff.
As for acclimating them, generally you don't need to go into your day
to day task details, but they should be explained the bigger picture
of what you do, how, and why. You cannot persuade them to be an
advocate in this manner - that only comes from building their trust.
But you can educate them on the generalities of what you do, what you
provide, and the high and low points of the processes you use
currently.
If your supervisor lacks management background, you have a bigger
issue than a manager not familiar with techcomm. The latter is easy to
handle, but the "no management skills" issue is tricky in general.
But, is this person a good leader? Is this person hands-off or more of
a micromanager? Does this person, regardless of management experience,
trust you and your judgement?
