It is not only recruiters who undervalue our worth...sometimes it is your own co-workers. The other day I was talking to three of our software developers about something completely un-related to salary when I mentioned something about now making a salary where I can take care of myself...never mentioned the salary..just an off-the-cuff comment.

They were all surprised that I could take care of myself on "a tech writers salary" They were just in shock! I have no clue what they thought I made...kind of got a chuckle out of the whole thing...even caught one looking up tech writer salaries online...sigh! I guess that is what happens when you make your job look too easy. :)

You reacted the same as I have in the past. If it hurts their feelings...so what? Sometimes the larger companies are bad about undercutting pay scales.
They can get away with it because some people (for several reasonas)accept that rate.
