Were you over-reacting? All depends...

* Was the job permanent with benefits or contract without benefits?

* Was the job located in a large metro area or off the beaten track?

* Does the job require extensive expertise? Or just average experience?

* Is the job five minutes from your home or two hours?

If my math is correct, $24/hour comes out to about $50k per year:

* A very good salary for a permanent job, with benefits, located in
Kansas (or Nebraska, or Iowa, or ... fill in the blank), requiring
average expertise.

* A lousy salary for a contract job, without benefits, located in
Manhattan, requiring above-average expertise.

Of course, average (or is it median?) household income in the U.S. is
about $40k. Lots of people would think $50k/year was great.
