Does anyone have any
research or can point me to any research that would indicate if using a
period with the enumerative symbol is better (or worse) than not using a
period?
No research. No periods. Period. It's already marked by the hanging indent (if not by a font or style change). You don't need the redundant marking of a period. My opinion, backed up by that of lots of other people, but I'd be surprised to find definitive research to prove it.
