I've been a developer of interactive training material (did the
instructional design, interaction design and content development in
conjunction with an SME and also did the programming) for nearly thirty
years and a tech writer for ten years.

The skills required to design and develop interactive material overlap
with writing and organizational skills, but there are lots of additional
things to know, many of which are best transmitted via apprenticeship.
And there are tools to learn. So even if this assignment doesn't involve
programming, it does involve non-writing skills.

The best book I know of on the topic is Alessi and Trollip's Multimedia
for Learning: Methods and Development. www.alessiandtrollip.com.
There are lots of lighter-weight less-complete books around.

If you want to learn interactive development, try to get an assignment
to work as a team with experienced developers.

Good luck.

Here is the ad:

A 4-6 month contract job is available immediately for a writer with
interactive web-based/CDROM training development experience. The
position is available full or part-time. Most work can be performed
offsite but some time will be required onsite in Baytown, TX. Knowledge
or experience with process instrumentation would be helpful. Submit
resume to bo***s*r -at- verizon -dot- net -dot-

What do you guys think? I'm just a writer, not a programmer.
