TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
But what also gets me is when they "paraphrase" what I've just said as,
"Oh, so you just dumb it down."
I've wanted to reply with, "Yeah, just for you," but held back.

only knew that I was a "writer" of some kind (essentially, "I write
instruction books, Mom"), but was never clear on just what I did. It
always made me so sad.

Really? I've never had that problem. I just say, 'I write the manuals
and the help for computer software,' and then wait for them to complain
about their favourite incomprehensible manual :)

How 'bout when someone - anyone - asks you what you do. You tell them
and they repeat back to you that you're a programmer or "software
engineer" or something.
Lots of the general public doesn't even know what a technical writer
is...
