But what also gets me is when they "paraphrase" what I've just said as,
"Oh, so you just dumb it down."

I've wanted to reply with, "Yeah, just for you," but held back.

only knew that I was a "writer" of some kind (essentially, "I write
instruction books, Mom"), but was never clear on just what I did. It
always made me so sad.

Really? I've never had that problem. I just say, 'I write the manuals
and the help for computer software,' and then wait for them to complain
about their favourite incomprehensible manual :)

How 'bout when someone - anyone - asks you what you do. You tell them
and they repeat back to you that you're a programmer or "software
engineer" or something.

Lots of the general public doesn't even know what a technical writer
is...
