- Encourage them to talk about their work
- Encourage them to talk about the things that interest them
- Show that you listen to their answers
- Show that you think about their answers before responding
- Show that you already share interests with them
- Hint that you have additional, hidden assets
- NOT focus on what's in it for you
- NOT begin with the phrase, "My mother wants to know..."
