Open the Modify Style dialog box for each of your styles and make sure in
each one that the check box labeled "Automatically Update" is NOT selected.
That's the problem.
Never check that option unless you want to test a style you're thinking of
using and want to save having to open the dialog box to make those changes.
Whenever you apply manual changes, if that box is checked, the entire style
is automatically modified. So just make sure it's not checked.
