Hook the hook. was: RE: Friday - So Bad It's Fun

I don't know. This instruction could be pretty clear. Thinking back to my
life as an elevator constructor, there where many times when a piece of
equipment was hooked hook to hook. Some of them life-saving. Especially
when it was not so obvious that the two hooks were to be hooked together.

Assume you are at the top of a 150' elevator shaft, you need to hang a
chain fall from a temporary crossbeam in the shaft. You will acomplish this
by placing a ladder from the floor level outside the shaft to the rear wall
of the shaft and then climbing the ladder with the chainfall in hand and
hooking it to the beam. You've been issued fall protection in the form of a
five-point harness with a 6 foot decelaration cord with hook and a fall
arrest with hook (basically a steel box with a lever inside and a hook
outside. The box goes around a steel cable anchored at the top of the
shaft. It can slide up the cable and down the cable, but a rapid downward
motion cause the lever to engage, grabbing the cable and stopping the
device from moving, the harder you pull down, the harder the lever grips
the cable.)

For the unitiated an average man creates several tons of force when falling
as few as 6-8 feet hence why even a short fall can be fatal. Hook your
harness up correctly and your fall arrest will prevent your demise and
other serious injuries. Do it wrong and the force of your fall can crush
you or at least break all your limbs even if your fall is arrested.

How do you know you've got it right? When you have hooked your hook to the
hook.
You've only got two hooks, attaching your devices in any way other than
hook to hook could be fatal.
What could be clearer than "hook the hook to the hook"?
